Thermochemistry

Internal Energy -----> Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy

Potential Energy : Forces between the particles of matter, Repulsive force between electrons, Repulsive force between the nucleus, Attractive force between the nucleus & electrons.

Kinetic Energy : due to the movement of atom, molecule, and electron

Activation Energy : energy needed to break the bonds within the molecules

Insulated System

• NO heat can flow between a system & its surrounding
• PE↓ ---> KE↑ ---> T↑ ........exothermic
• PE↑ ---> KE↓ --->T↓ .......endothermic

Uninsulated System

• The buildup of molecular kinetic energy (heat) can be affect by a flow of heat out of the system into cooler surroundings
• PE↓ ---> exothermic : heat is flowing OUT of the system
• During high PE, cooling is occuring. heat tend to flow from the warmer surrounding into the container
• PE↑ ---> endothermic : heat is flowing INTO the system

1) Natural gas :

• Advantages : High efficiency and moderate cost
• Disadvantages : Non-renewable & pollution

2) Oil :

• Advantages : Easy to transport & many uses.
• Disadvantages : Non-renewable & pollution

3) Coal :

• Advantages : Cheap & easy to mined
• Disadvantages : Non-renewable & pollution

4) Nuclear Power :

• Advantages : High energy Production & low accident rate
• Disadvantages : Non-renewable & pollution

5) Solar Energy :

• Advantages : Good heating efficiency & most renewable
• Disadvantages : Weather Dependent & needs large collection areas

6) Hydroelectricity :

• Advantages : Renewable, low operating cost & minimal pollution
• Disadvantages : Limited sites & destruction of natural habitat

7) Wind Power :

• Advantages : Renewable, low operating cost & minimal pollution
• Disadvantages : Limited sites & dependent of sufficient wind strength

8) Tidal Power :

• Advantages : Renewable, low operating cost & minimal pollution
• Disadvantages : Limited sites & tidal time dependent

9) Geothermal Energy :

• Advantages : Renewable & minimal pollution
• Disadvantages : Limited sites & need to dig deep into the Earth
